Hall Garden Project

If it seems you have a salad's volume of produce to harvest, feel free to take it to the Food Bank, M-F, 8-2:  http://splfoodbank.com/donate

Pots

If you have any pots greater than 8" diameter or larger which you can donate, please leave them under the stairs at the hall. Some tall stakes would be appreciated as well.

Soil/Seeds

Meghan has offered to donate some seeds, as has Susan. These are in a basket in the Cub locker at the Hall;  please try to keep them tidy. So far we have:

  • Scarlet runner beans
  • Royal burgundy beans
  • Carrot
  • Cucumber
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Peas
  • Pumpkin
  • Tomato
  • Beet
  • Brussel Sprout
  • Bok choy
  • Sunflower
  • Swiss chard
  • Broccoli
  • Coriander (cilantro)
  • Green onion

Robin will purchase potting soil and seeds as necessary, and hope to achieve a discount. Jo has agreed to this purchasing. We'll keep the soil under the stairs for the time being. Let Robin know if you need more soil.

Home Hardware in Sidney has agreed to donate two 102L bags of soil! We'll need to put a thank you on the fence, and include them in the press release we eventually write about this project!

Planting

If your section does some planting, be sure the pots are labeled, and you have at least a written record of what's been planted and where. email the details to Robin and we'll compile a master list.

Robin will get some large popsicle sticks for labelling. We can leave these with the seeds;  there are several markers there as well.

Other program ideas

  • Robin's mom, Louise, is available for hands-off in-person consultation (she was a Brownie leader for years, so she's qualified!); please email Robin if you would like Louise to visit a section meeting and give direction. She may visit the Hall from time to time to check on the garden.
  • Youth might like to take pictures or sketch to show the progress of plants. Personal planting journal?
  • We could make signs to explain what we're up to, and post them on the outside of the fence. Both Jo and Susan have access to laminators. With one letter per page, we could do "1st Tsartlip Scouts Community Garden" or something like that.

Watering

Be sure to water gently so as not to upset the seeds or plants!

The watering schedule is here:

Ideally each of our families will be able to sign up for an evening shift once every two weeks or so. There is a hose at the Hall;  when you come to water, bring your own can!  Or could someone donate a can?

Harvesting

The Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank is "excited about this fantastic project!" More details to follow, but we are welcome to take them the produce as it arrives.

If it seems you have a salad's worth of produce to harvest, feel free to take it to the Food Bank, M-F, 8-2:  http://splfoodbank.com/donate

Please remember that this is a group project. This means it's important to have everyone's input and participation to help ensure the success. The community (and Guides and Hall Committee) will be pleased and appreciative if the garden goes well; it won't look very professional if we're not committed :) Again, I would appreciate your feedback.
